The Radical Unacceptability Hypothesis: Accounting for Unacceptability without Universal Constraints

چکیده
The Radical Unacceptability Hypothesis (RUH) has been proposed as a way of explaining the unacceptability extraction from islands and frozen structures. This hypothesis explicitly assumes distinction between due to violations local well-formedness conditions—conditions on constituency, constituent order, morphological form—and extra-grammatical factors. We explore RUH with respect classical islands, extend it broader range phenomena, including freezing, A′ chain interactions, zero-relative clauses, topic weak crossover, subjects parasitic gaps, sensitivity information structure. picture that emerges is consistent RUH, suggests more generally otherwise well-formed configurations reflects non-syntactic factors, not principles grammar.

Unacceptability of Kyoto Global Consensus Report on Helicobacter Pylori Gastritis.
The Kyoto global consensus report on Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) gastritis has had a great effect on the field of H. pylori studies worldwide. For the first time H. pylori gastritis was defined entirely as an infectious disease and H. pylori-associated dyspepsia as a new category of organic dyspepsia apart from functional dyspepsia, together with a proposed diagnostic algorithm. Accordingly...
متن کاملCross-linguistic Variation in a Processing Account: The Case of Multiple Wh-questions
0. Introduction The distinction between acceptable and unacceptable sentences has long served as the empirical basis for theoretical linguistics. Traditionally, two kinds of explanations have been offered to account for perceived unacceptability. In the first, unacceptability reflects the violation of grammatical constraints. The second explanation attributes unacceptability to processing compl...

متن کاملGradience in Linguistic Data
This paper provides a survey of the theoretical and experimental findings on degrees of grammaticality, with a special focus on gradience in syntax. We first discuss the theoretical relevance of gradient data, and argue that such data should be elicited experimentally in order to be reliable. We then review a set of experimental findings on gradience, which lead to the hypothesis that linguisti...
متن کاملProcessing Complex NP Islands in Hebrew
Since Ross's (1967) work on island constraints until many present day works, the treatment of island phenomena is mostly based on universal constraints on the grammar. However, it has been claimed that the unacceptability of certain island violations can be explained by extragrammatical factors, such as processing di culties. The advantage of this approach is that the unacceptability is explain...
